Say Teklong

General Manager

Say Teklong started working at Rambutan as a receptionist in 2013. He soon became a supervisor, and is now the Residence Manager and is in charge of maintenance at the hotel and resort.

How long have you worked at Rambutan?

I’ve worked at Rambutan in Siem Reap for more than five years.

I live in Siem Reap by myself in a room near Psar Korm. On a normal day, I wake up at 6:00 a.m. I start work at different times each day. Sometimes it’s 7:00 a.m., sometimes 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., depending on the schedule. After work I go home and do some housework or hang out with my brother and friends. In my free time, I like to visit the airport and sit outside in the fresh air and watch the planes. It has been a dream to travel around the world and learn about different places. I studied tourism and hospitality at Build Bright University, and, when I first started my degree, I wanted to become a flight attendant. I’ve traveled a little bit—to Malaysia and Thailand.

I started working at Rambutan in September 2013. This is my first job. I learned many things and I am still learning from the other people at the hotel. I learned about how to work here. They open everything for us. For example, before I didn’t know what gay friendly was, but now I know it’s good. It’s comfortable here. It’s like family. It’s a small hotel, but there are many guests and it’s always busy. When I talk to my friends who work at other hotels, they say that when you work reception, you only do reception. But here, I can help other departments, and learn everything.

In the future, I want to have own business in the hospitality industry. I have two plans. One is to open a natural resort in the countryside and the other is to have farm for people to visit where I grow flowers and fruit. In Cambodia there aren’t any big flower farms like they have in Thailand. Sometimes I grow some flowers at Rambutan, and I want to go to study more about flowers in Thailand. Another option is to study in China. There is a university that offers scholarships, Yunan University, and I’d like to study business management there.
