Where are you from?

I’m from Prey Veng Province, 400 km from Siem Reap. My family moved to Siem Reap in 2001. Before we moved, my family were farmers and my father was a bricklayer. In 1995 he visited Siem Reap and he loved it. My father decided he needed to find one place to stay so the children could study and the family could be stable. So he chose to come to Siem Reap because there were many job opportunities. I have five siblings and we’re all still living in Siem Reap.

When I applied to programs, I chose IT, tourism, and law. But there was not enough demand for IT and tourism at the time and they didn’t offer those classes, so I ended up studying law and graduated my bachelor’s degree.

I was working at a Japanese restaurant and met Dirk. He thought I was polite and a good server. When I stopped working there in 2009, he called the restaurant and got my number. Then, in 2010, the manager of Rambutan called me and asked if I wanted to work at this new hotel. I arrived at the hotel to bring my CV and was surprised to see Dirk. I didn’t know he was the owner. I spoke with him and his partner Tum and accepted a job there. From the first time I came here, I really loved it. We were a big team. We used to wear big trousers and singlets as a uniform. My first job here was as a waiter serving breakfast for six months. During that time, Dirk asked me if I liked that job and I said yes, he decided to also train me on reception. So I would serve breakfast and then, in the afternoon, I trained in reception. Then I moved to reception, but sometimes helped out with breakfast. After two or three years on reception, I was promoted to reception supervisor. Two years later I became an accounting assistant, and after that I moved to the reservation team. Last year, I was promoted to my current position.

It’s a different style from other hotels. Here we work as a family. In other hotels, they have different departments, different positions, and here it’s also like that, especially as we grow, but more like a family. The management team is always pushing us and supporting us. They never reject any question, they always have answers. I also like the building. There are lots of flowers, beautiful balconies, nice bedrooms. We have a different style.

I am almost finished my Masters of Public Administration, so, if I have the opportunity, I will apply for a government job. The exam is two years one time. I would also want to start a business. A small, family business selling something from my home that I can pass on to my wife to run, while I support from the side.

They should see the lives of people in the countryside because it’s very different than the way people live overseas. I often go to the countryside with my family. We drive around, buy things, eat interesting food. I especially go to see how the countryside is developing, like if they have electricity, how houses are improving, and road conditions.

I recommend spicy sour soup with pork ribs. Everybody in Cambodia eats this kind of soup.
