E Mao has been part of the Rambutan team for nine years. She was born in Siem Reap, has two children, and is an invaluable part of the cleaning staff.
How long have you worked at Rambutan?
I have worked at Rambutan for almost nine years.
What was your family and life like growing up?
I’m originally from Siem Reap. My mother was from Laos and was a dancer with the Royal Ballet of Phnom Penh. Later in life, after she married my father, she was a traditional healer. My father was in the military. He died when I was seven years old and my mother died in 2002. I was an only child, so I had no brothers or sisters.
What is your life like now?
I still live in Siem Reap today, with my three children, two girls who are 18 and 15 and a boy who is 9 years old. My house is very close to work – only five minutes!
Why did you want to work at Rambutan?
At my old job I wasn’t paid very well, so I started looking for a new job. I started working at Rambutan in 2007. Rambutan has a more traditional look than the last hotel I worked at. I like it because it’s smaller.
What is it like to work at Rambutan?
I like my team and I love Dirk and Tommy. They are kind to us and don’t overload us with work. They are fair. Rambutan is paying for my middle daughter to go to school. She studies in secondary school. They also paid for my oldest daughter, but she quit school and now she works in a restaurant.
What are your hopes for the future?
I’m not sure what my hopes are yet, because my children are still young and I have to work to support them. I would like for one of my children to be a doctor or nurse.
